The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) applies to all healthcare providers, including Home Health Aides.
HIPAA allows HHAs to share information about clients in public.
There are NO consequences for violating HIPAA.
If a neighbor asks you how your client is doing, you should reply, "I'm sorry but I cannot share that inforation. It's confidential."
Name, telephone number, and medical record number are some examples of Protected Health Information (PHI).
